Methodox / Virtual Keyboard Download
Windows desktop · Android

Your computer keyboard is the instrument.

Methodox Virtual Keyboard puts two to six octaves of piano and twenty drum pads on screen, then puts all of them under keys you already have. Every note is synthesized while you hold it, about 10–12 ms after the key goes down.

Performance

Played from the keyboard you already have

This is the part most on-screen keyboards skip. You are not clicking one note at a time with a mouse — you are playing with ten fingers on a keyboard built for ten fingers. Q W E R T Y U is the lowest octave's seven white notes, A S D F G H J the middle octave's, Z X C V B N M the highest: pitch rises as you read down the keyboard. The number row and the numpad are the twenty drums. Everything else is transport.

  • The three note rows — pitch rises as you read down
  • The seven white notes, C to B, of that row's octave
  • Run-on keys, carrying into the next octave up
  • Drum pads — number row on top, numpad below
  • Transpose, range, sustain, panic
  • Left alone by the instrument
QtoU·AtoJ·ZtoM
The seven white notes, C to B. The top letter row is the lowest octave, the home row the middle one, the bottom row the highest — pitch rises as you read down the keyboard.
IOPandKL
Run-on keys. They carry on into the next octave up, so a run can cross rows without your hand jumping.
or[
Transpose down a semitone.
=or]
Transpose up a semitone.
Page UpPage Down
Move the visible octave range up and down.
1to0
The top row of ten drum pads, left to right — 1 is the first pad and 0 the tenth.
NumpadorShift+1to0
The bottom row of ten pads. Shift is there for keyboards with no numpad.
Space
Sustain, for as long as you hold it.
Esc
Panic. Everything sounding stops, immediately.
Drums

Twenty pads, two rows of ten

The drum kit is not a separate mode you switch into. It sits with the keys and plays at the same time as them. The number row fires the top ten, left to right; the numpad fires the bottom ten — or Shift and a digit, if your keyboard has no numpad. Each pad is striped with its percussion family, the same colours the app uses.

Voices and sound

Six voices, and four ways to shape them

One selector changes what the instrument is. The controls beside it change how hard it is being played, how loud it is, whether notes hang on, and how much room is around them.

  • Grand Piano
  • Electric Piano
  • Vibraphone
  • Church Organ
  • Nylon Guitar
  • Strings
Dynamics

Soft, normal, hard

Three settings for how firmly the instrument is being struck. Pick one and the whole performance sits at that weight.

Master volume

One level for everything

Keys and drums together, on a single control.

Sustain

Hold what you played

Notes keep ringing after the key comes up. Toggle it in the controls, or hold Space while you play.

Reverb

Put it in a room

Add a tail to the sound, or take it away and hear the instrument dry.

The engine

Synthesized while you hold it, not replayed from a clip

The sound comes from SoundFont synthesis. The note is generated for as long as you hold the key, which is why notes overlap, ring on and decay the way an instrument does instead of cutting off wherever a recording ended.

10–12 ms measured end to end, from the key going down to the sound leaving the machine — inside the window where a note feels like it happened when you pressed the key, not after it.
Editions

Two editions, one instrument

The desktop edition is the whole instrument. The phone edition is the part of it that fits in your hands.
